Steinbrenner Blasts Wells, Jeter, Mattingly, Jackson, Mantle, DiMaggio, Ruth For "Tarnishing the Yankee Image"

TAMPA, FL - New York Yankee owner George Steinbrenner today blasted current and former Yankees David Wells, Derek Jeter, Don Mattingly, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth and a slew of others for actions he said "tarnished the image and tradition of greatness, dedication, excellence, pride, industriousness, punctuality, clean living and exemplary table manners that have characterized the Yankees for the better part of a century."

Steinbrenner attacked Wells' upcoming autobiography, "Perfect I'm Not! Boomer on Beer, Brawls, Backaches and Baseball," saying that there was no place for partying, boozing and outright horseplay in the Yankee organization.

Steinbrenner then reiterated his criticisms of superstar shortstop Derek Jeter, whose late-night clubbing and romantic escapades he blamed for the Yankees' failure to win a near-unprecedented two straight World Series. "Only four championships in seven years?" Steinbrenner said, referring to Jeter's career record. "That's barely even a title every other season, and yet he's out living it up. Unacceptable!"

The Yankee owner also took issue with Don Mattingly's hair, Reggie Jackson's showboating, and the drinking and womanizing of Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio and Babe Ruth. "That kind of stuff is clearly not what being a Yankee is all about," said Steinbrenner.

Added Johnny Sullivan of New Bedford, Mass: "Yankees suck! NO-mah!"
