Bryant shows off the giant diamond ring before presenting it to Shaunie O'Neal
LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant, who many feel forced the team's hand in trading center Shaquille O'Neal to the Miami Heat, presented the big man's wife, Shaunie, with a $7 million diamond ring this weekend. "I've been down this road before," Kobe said. "You screw a woman over like that, you do something unforgivable that affects her whole family, then at the very least you can do her a solid and get her a giant diamond ring."

Mrs. O'Neal said that while she certainly appreciated the gesture, it probably amounted to too little, too late. "Kobe signed his contract, and he gets to stay in L.A., and that's great for him. But Shaquille and I loved it here too, our whole lives were here, and now we've got to head across the country to Miami. It doesn't seem fair, and, I'm not sure that any diamond can make up for it."

Bryant, however, seemed certain that the issue was settled. "If there's one thing I know about women," Kobe said, "it's that there's nothing you can do that can't be fixed by giving them really expensive jewelry. They're like pets, when you give them a treat. It sure works with Vanessa and me. I know Shaquille and Shaunie haven't been married as long as we have, though, so, I'm happy to help them out and pass a little bit of my wisdom along."

"That's messed up," Shaquille O'Neal said. "You don't be giving stuff to another dude's wife. Although, I'm sure I'll be sending Vanessa a sympathy card the day after we play the Lakers next season."
