Soccer Movie Hinges on Low Scoring Tie

DENVER - The popular indie film "Bend It Like Beckham," which tells the story of a young Indian girl's experience with competitive soccer in Britain, managed to hang a pivotal scene on a penalty kick and a 1-1 tie, reported Jason Wu, after watching the movie on DVD this weekend. "Yeah. Color me shocked. The climactic game of the soccer movie came down to a 1-1 tie," said Wu.

Wu stated that he was aware of "Bend It Like Beckham" when it was released theatrically two years ago, but he had no interest in going to see it. "Oh, sure," Wu added, "all my female friends raved about it. It seems like any movie that says 'Girls can do anything' just whips them into a frenzy. But me? Going to a soccer movie? I'm a sports fan." However, Wu's new girlfriend Katie Sommers suggested the film as an activity for their fourth date over the weekend. "She had the DVD in her purse," said Wu. "I need to find out if she just carries it with her at all times. That might be cause to end the relationship."

Wu said that he decided not to put up a fight, in the interest of possibly scoring a fifth date. After briefly considering alternative suggestions, such as "Hoosiers" or "Bull Durham," Wu instead kept quiet and helped make microwave popcorn. According to Wu, "I had to realize that, for her, it wasn't about watching a sports movie. She was in it for the girl-power message." Still, it came as little surprise that a pivotal moment in the film centered around a 1-1 tie. "I have to say," Wu admitted sadly, "that is about as exciting as soccer gets. A 2-2 tie probably would have strained believability."

"Oh, crap," Wu added later. "I just realized that I owe my buddy Mark five bucks. When 'Bend It Like Beckham' came out, I bet him that if I were ever going to see a soccer movie, I'd sooner see 'The Big Green.' This is, like, our second most expensive date so far."
