HONOLULU - 14-year-old sensation Michelle Wie became the youngest golfer, male or female, to compete in a PGA Tour event when she played the first two rounds of the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club. Despite missing the cut, Wie was lauded for her poise and maturity. Among her admirers was Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski, who called Wie after the tournament.

"I never heard of this guy," Wie said Sunday evening after talking to Polanski, who last March won the Best Director Academy Award for "The Pianist" but was unable to attend the Los Angeles ceremony to collect his trophy in person. "But he was nice enough, I guess."

Polanski reportedly told Wie that he was a big fan, and that he had been following her career for about a year. "I want to congratulate you on your performance," the Polish director said to the 14-year-old golf star. "So," he then asked Wie, "what are you doing later?"

Wie said that though Polanski seemed like a very pleasant and polite man, it was unlikely that the two would speak again. "I was talking on the phone to him," Wie said, "and my dad goes, 'Who's that?' And I go, 'It's someone named Roman Polanski.' And then my dad just grabbed the phone from me and threw it on the floor and stomped on it."
