NEW ORLEANS - Capitalizing on an outstanding tournament by freshman sensation Carmelo Anthony, Syracuse captured the NCAA men's basketball title Monday night. The Orangemen beat the Kansas Jayhawks 81-78, earning coach Jim Boeheim his first national championship. Meanwhile, chick in accounting Tammy Bruener won an estimated $150 in the office pool.

"This is a dream come true," said Anthony. "I grew up watching the Final Four, and I always hoped I'd be able to play in the championship one day. I can't even describe how I feel right now."

"This is neat," Bruener said of her office pool win. "Maybe me and Chad [Yang, Breuner's boyfriend of three months] will go out and celebrate at Chili's."

"To come this far and lose," said Kansas coach Roy Williams, "it's a real blow to me, it's a real blow to the kids who worked their hearts out to get here. We've got to give all the credit to Syracuse, though. They were the better team tonight."

"I can't believe this," said Don Novotny, a workplace acquaintance of Bruener's who was also in the office pool. "Tammy doesn't even know anything about basketball. She said the only reason she picked Syracuse was because her cousin went there. We should just limit this pool to actual basketball fans. That's what we'd do if I ran it. There should be a rule where, like, you actually have to be able to name one of the players on the team you picked to win or something."

Monday's victory was a big win for Syracuse's Boeheim, whose long and distinguished coaching career was regarded by some college basketball observers as incomplete without a national title. "It sure feels great to get that monkey off my back," said the elated coach after the game.

"I never win anything," added Bruener of her office pool championship. "That's what's so funny."
